HOW DOES IT WORK?

Membership runs on a flexible month-to-month system with three plans to choose from. Each provides access to our beautiful workspace and amenities. Equipment use varies from plan to plan depending on your needs, plus an à la carte menu allows for expansion.

 

A full residency option is available for folks who just want it all!

MEMBERSHIP & RESIDENCY OPTIONS
  • Overview:
    A great starting point for writers and creatives who want space access, but don't need a bunch of equipment. Work amongst your peers in a casual, inspiring environment away from your home office. This simple plan has the option to get trained on our professional-grade laser printer/scanner/copier for those who want to create tangible printed work. $40/month ​ Ideal for: writing, zine making, graphic design, and other creative computer work.
  • Available Equipment:
    Without Training/Certification: - Basic bindery hand tools including scissors, X-Acto knives, cutting mats, bone folders, rulers, and staplers. *Note: no other bindery or print tools are available at this level. Please join our Core Creator membership to access more equipment. With Training/Certification: - High resolution laser printing (up to 2400 dpi) via our Xerox C-9065. - Print job management, color adjustments, and easy booklet printing via Fiery Command Workstation. *Please see the training tab for more information on certification.
  • Available Add-Ons:
    - Days can be added for just $10/day as many times as needed per month. - Additional meeting room time can be rented at $5/hour. - Private studios with 24/7 access are available for a total of $350/mo, including membership. Please inquire if you'd like a tour of our studio pod. - Basic book and print supplies that we carry in house may be purchased. Please inquire regarding our selection of book cloth, board, and standard in-stock papers.

  • Is shop certification needed prior to joining?
    No, not at this level, unless laser printing is desired. (See optional trainings below.) However, we are a space for creatives in book and print arts or adjacent fields. Potential members will asked to self-identify as doing work that is aligned with this mission.
  • Optional Add-On Trainings Available:
    Digital Laser Printing Orientation 30min session: $20.00 Members may register here. This training quickly reviews the features and use of our high-end Xerox C-9060 laser printer, as well as its management system, Fiery Command Workstation. The training covers printing, scanning, and copying procedures for various scenarios. Once certified, members are assigned an accounting key that tracks usage, billed monthly. Standard letter-sized copy paper is provided to members with this certification. Scanning: Free Black and white printing: $0.07 per side. Color printing: $0.15 per side.

    Our main, foundational plan with access to the space and most of the equipment needed to make a variety of books with a mix of print technologies. A step up from our Explorer plan, this membership allows access to all binding and paper cutting equipment as well as Risographic printing through our in-house partner, bearbear. $60/month ​ Ideal for: Riso printing, specialty zine making, chapbooks, self-publishing, bookbinding.

Please follow these steps to join us: Sign up for Riso Technics on our class calendar.* Attend and pass the course. If you don't pass, you'll be asked to take a gap lesson to brush up on your skills. At the end of your Riso course, sign up for a shop orientation. (Orientation is where you officially join, tour the entire space, pay your membership fee, and get certified on the paper cutters if needed.) Keep in mind that we schedule orientations throughout the month but the next one may not be happening for several days. A scheduled space orientation is required for your comfort and safety. Once you have completed your training certification, your shop orientation, and officially registered as a member, you're all set! You'll have access to our secure facility and the ability to sign out space and equipment whenever you need. Your membership is month-to-month and can be canceled any time. * Experienced risographers may test out of this course by contacting us.     For the print-mastermind, this level builds on our Core plan to include letterpress access in addition to Risography, laser printing, and all bindery/finish equipment. Great for makers who want a bit of everything and anticipate doing a variety of project work--or want to focus deeply on their letterpress skills and practice. $80/month ​ Ideal for: Letterpress posters, broadsides and chapbooks, Linocut printing, Riso printing, specialty zine making, artist book projects that involve multiple print styles, curious beings who want to "know it all!"

    Residency is a special type of membership for deeper involvement, longer projects, or learning steadily over time. Residency includes full space and equipment access--but at a reduced cost per day, and for initial training. Other special perks include flat file storage, the option to show work in an annual gallery night, and some fancy Bindery swag! After one month, residents are eligible to request off-hours shop time to work in the space beyond The Bindery's normal operating hours. $120/month with a 3 month commitment ​ Ideal for: Longer-term or recurring project work, Letterpress posters, broadsides and chapbooks, Linocut printing, Riso printing, specialty zine making, artist book projects that involve multiple print styles, folks who want to learn it all!

Letterpress Technics is a two-part training that covers the ins’n’outs of printing at The Bindery using our Vandercook No. 4, and Vandercook table-top No 099. These presses can be used with our selection of wooden type, metal type, and Ludlow slugs, or they can be set to do other kinds of relief printing such as linocuts, wood cuts, or polymer plates for those that wish to bring their own! Industrial Binding Equipment Training $30 training/$10 per month for use. This training covers safe use of our high capacity wire stitcher, paper drill, and manual spiral and comb binders. Members may reach out to schedule. Foil Stamping for Paper, Cloth and Leather $30 training/$10 per month for use. This training covers safe use of our Kwikprint foil stamper and related typefaces. Black, white, silver and gold foils are included in use. Members may reach out to schedule. Hot Metal Typecasting: Ludlow Foundry Pricing based on project specifics. This training covers safe use of our two Ludlow Typograph Machines and accessories during open foundry hours. Ludlow machines are used to easily make new, custom lead type for letterpress printing or foil stamping. Members may reach out for more information regarding the foundry, and to schedule training.
  • Is shop certification needed prior to joining?
    Yes. This membership requires certification before joining. Optional trainings can be added at any time for further access (see below). Required Training for Certification: Letterpress Technics 2 sessions, 3 hours each: $144.00 total (for both sessions: including 10% Resident Discount) (Our calendar lives here to sign up.) **OR** Riso Technics 1 session, 2 hours: $72 (including 10% Resident Discount) (Our calendar lives here to sign up.) **PLUS** Shop orientation including paper cutting equipment 1 hour: free ***** * A note for clarity: either of the above technics trainings is required to be a resident, but the other may be added at any time (along with our other optional trainings below). Shop orientation is required regardless.
  • Want to join us? Here's what to do:
    Training and orientation are required for this membership level. These courses run at various times throughout each month. Please follow these steps to join us: Sign up for either Letterpress Technics or Riso Technics on our class calendar.* Attend and pass the course. If you don't pass, you'll be asked to take a gap lesson to brush up on your skills. At the end of your course, sign up for the next shop orientation. (Orientation is where you officially join, tour the entire space, pay your membership fee, and get certified on the paper cutters if needed.) Keep in mind that we schedule orientations throughout the month but the next one may not be happening for several days. A scheduled space orientation is required for your comfort and safety. Once you have completed your training certification, your shop orientation, and officially registered as a resident, you're all set! You'll have access to our secure facility and the ability to sign out space and equipment whenever you need. Your residency runs on a quarterly cycle and can be canceled or renewed every three months. * Experienced letterpress printers and/or Risographers may test out of our trainings by contacting us.
