Programs at the bindery

We are host to, and/or produce, community programming that celebrates book and literary arts in our region.  Stay tuned for more info as we launch.

Milwaukee zine fest

Milwaukee Zine Fest has been a beloved part of our city's creative lit scene for over a decade. In 2018 The Bindery co-produced the fest for the first time, in partnership with Milwaukee Public Library, and will continue to do so annually. Held at MPL's Central Branch, our festival attracts hundreds of guests and dozens of vendors from across the country! The day-long event includes zine-related workshops and hands-on activities for all ages.

2019’s Fest was April 6th. Click below to learn more and follow our separate FB page for photos, info, and news for 2020!

classes, workshops & events

We offer a range of book and word-focused programming with our own staff, as well as collaborating organizations, throughout the year.  (Writing classes, simple book making, special tours, and Ludlow typecasting to name a few.) Want to host a class with us or collaborate on an event? Excellent! Let us know.

Otherwise please stay tuned for our in-house workshop schedule, and follow our social media for current/upcoming events and programming!

We work with organizations and institutions to create unique, hands-on, book art and writing experiences for their patrons. Looking for a great way to activate your space, bring your audience together, or otherwise make your event memorable via a custom collaborative publication? We’ve got your back.

The Bindery has collaborated with The Milwaukee Art Museum, Ex Fabula, Historic Milwaukee, The Milwaukee Public Library and many others: we’d love to hear what you have in mind. Reach out: let’s work together!

typewrite | milwaukee

The Bindery is home to Typewrite | MKE,  a community program dedicated to experiencing and celebrating typewritten arts. We offer shared access to typewriters through classes, evening "type-ins," and other playful collaborations with like-minded MKE literati.

In the 1860s Milwaukee was birthplace to the first practical typewriter and the QWERTY layout of our modern-day keyboards.  We highlight this history and inspire today's creative writers to slow down and reconnect with the tangible.

Girl scouts book artist merit badge training

The Bindery is certified to cover all five steps needed to earn one’s Cadette Girl Scout Book Artist Merit Badge. Our comprehensive troop workshops explore book anatomy, the tools of the trade, and delve into several hands-on activities that teach techniques in a fun, interactive environment. The Bindery proactively supports female-identified binders of all ages!

We work with troops throughout the Greater Milwaukee Area and can travel to you! Please reach out.
